How to Choose the Right Google Business Profile Categories (Complete Guide)
By Mike Martin • More Leads Local
Your Google Business Profile primary category is the single most influential ranking factor for appearing in the Map Pack. Choose the wrong one, and you're fighting an uphill battle from day one. Choose the right one, and you've given yourself a significant advantage.
Primary vs Secondary Categories
Google lets you choose one primary category and multiple secondary categories. Your primary category has by far the most impact on what searches your profile appears for.
Primary category: This should be the single most accurate description of your core business. If you're a plumber, your primary category should be "Plumber" — not "Contractor" or "Home Services."
Secondary categories: These expand the range of searches you can appear for. Add all relevant secondary categories, but don't add irrelevant ones hoping to cast a wider net.
How to Research the Right Category
Google has over 4,000 categories, and they're not all obvious. Here's how to find the right ones:
- Search for your service in your area and look at what categories your top competitors use
- Use GMB tools like PlePer's GBP Category tool to browse the full list
- Think like your customer — what would they search for when looking for your service?
- Be specific — "Emergency Plumber" is better than "Plumber" if emergency work is your speciality
Common Category Mistakes
- Too broad: Choosing "Contractor" when "Roofing Contractor" is available
- Too many: Adding 10+ categories dilutes your relevance signal
- Irrelevant categories: Adding categories for services you don't actually offer
- Wrong primary: Putting a secondary service as your primary category
When to Change Your Categories
Review your categories quarterly. Google regularly adds new categories, and one that fits your business perfectly might not have existed when you first set up your profile. Also review them if you notice competitors outranking you for searches where you should be relevant.
Categories are a core part of our GBP optimisation process and one of the first things we audit for every client.
