What Is the Google Map Pack and How Do You Get Into It?
By Mike Martin • More Leads Local
The Google Map Pack (also called the Local Pack or Local 3-Pack) is the section of Google's search results that displays three local business listings alongside a map. It appears for searches with local intent — and it's the most valuable piece of real estate in local search.
Why the Map Pack Matters
Studies consistently show that the Map Pack receives a disproportionate share of clicks for local searches. When someone searches for a local service, the Map Pack appears above all organic results, making it the first thing searchers see.
If you're in the Map Pack, you're visible. If you're not, you're essentially invisible for that search — even if your website ranks well in organic results below.
What Determines Map Pack Rankings
Map Pack rankings are powered by Google's local algorithm: proximity, relevance, and prominence. But practically speaking, the biggest levers are:
- Your Google Business Profile — a well-optimised, active profile is essential
- Reviews — quantity, quality, recency, and your responses
- Categories — particularly your primary category
- NAP consistency — matching information across the web
- Activity signals — regular posts, photo uploads, and engagement
The "4th Position" Problem
Only three businesses appear in the Map Pack. If you're in position four, you're hidden behind a "More places" link that most searchers never click. The difference between position three and position four is dramatic in terms of visibility and leads.
How to Get Into the Map Pack
There's no single trick. It requires systematic optimisation of your GBP, consistent effort over time, and a comprehensive local SEO strategy that addresses all ranking factors simultaneously.
