Google Business Profile Photos: What to Upload, How Often, and Why It Matters

By Mike Martin • More Leads Local

Google's own data shows that businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more click-throughs to their websites. Yet most businesses either upload a handful of photos when they first set up their profile and never touch it again, or don't upload any at all.

Why Photos Matter for Local SEO

Photos serve two purposes: they influence potential customers, and they send activity signals to Google. Regular photo uploads tell Google your business is active and engaged — which positively impacts your ranking in local search results.

What Types of Photos to Upload

  • Team photos: Put faces to your business. Customers want to see who they'll be working with
  • Work photos: Before and after shots, completed projects, work in progress
  • Premises photos: Interior and exterior of your business location
  • Product photos: High-quality images of what you sell or create
  • Behind-the-scenes: Show the real, human side of your business

Photo Quality Guidelines

  • Use real photos, not stock images — Google's AI can detect stock photos
  • Minimum resolution: 720x720 pixels
  • Well-lit, clear images (avoid blurry or dark photos)
  • No heavy text overlays or promotional graphics
  • Geotagged if possible (photos taken on mobile devices usually include location data)

How Often to Upload

We recommend uploading new photos weekly. This creates a consistent activity signal that Google rewards. One or two quality photos per week is better than 20 photos in one day followed by months of silence.

Cover Photo and Logo

Your cover photo is the first image many potential customers see. Make it count — use a high-quality image that represents your business well. Your logo should be clean and recognisable at small sizes.

Photo management is one of the four pillars of our GBP optimisation strategy. It's simple but requires the discipline of consistent weekly execution.
