What Are Local Citations and Why Do They Matter for Local SEO?

By Mike Martin • More Leads Local

Local citations are online mentions of your business that include your name, address, and phone number (NAP). They appear on business directories, social platforms, apps, and websites across the internet — and they play an important role in how Google evaluates your local business.

Types of Local Citations

Structured citations are listings on business directories where your information is displayed in a consistent format — sites like Yell, Thomson Local, FreeIndex, Yelp, and industry-specific directories.

Unstructured citations are mentions of your business on blogs, news articles, forums, or other websites where your NAP information appears within the text but not in a structured directory format.

Why Citations Matter for Local SEO

Citations serve as independent verification of your business's existence and details. When Google sees your business mentioned consistently across multiple trusted sources, it gains confidence in your legitimacy and accuracy. This confidence translates into stronger local rankings.

Quality Over Quantity

In the early days of local SEO, citation quantity was king. Businesses would submit to hundreds of directories hoping for a ranking boost. Today, quality matters far more than quantity.

Focus on:

  • Core directories: Google Business Profile, Yell, Thomson Local, Bing Places, Apple Maps
  • Industry directories: Checkatrade, TrustATrader, Bark, Houzz (depending on your sector)
  • Local directories: Chamber of Commerce, local business directories specific to your area

Citation Consistency Is Critical

Every citation must display your NAP information identically. Inconsistent citations do more harm than good. Before building new citations, audit and fix your existing ones.

Citations are one piece of the broader local search algorithm. They work alongside your Google Business Profile, reviews, and website to build a comprehensive local presence.
