How Google Reviews Influence Local Search Rankings: The Complete Picture

By Mike Martin • More Leads Local

Google reviews aren't just about building customer trust — they're a direct ranking signal in Google's local search algorithm. Understanding exactly how reviews influence your rankings can help you prioritise your review strategy effectively.

The Four Dimensions of Review Signals

1. Review Quantity

More reviews generally correlate with higher rankings. But quantity alone isn't enough — a business with 200 reviews averaging 3.5 stars may be outranked by a business with 80 reviews averaging 4.8 stars.

2. Review Quality (Star Rating)

Your average star rating affects both your ranking and your click-through rate. Businesses in the Map Pack typically have ratings of 4.0 or above. Below that, and you're at a significant disadvantage.

3. Review Recency

Recent reviews carry more weight than old ones. A business that received 50 reviews two years ago but nothing since looks stagnant. A business receiving 4-6 reviews per month looks active and thriving.

4. Review Velocity

The rate at which you receive reviews matters. A steady, consistent flow is better than sporadic bursts. Sudden spikes in reviews can actually trigger Google's spam filters.

Keywords in Reviews

When customers naturally mention your services or location in their reviews, it strengthens your relevance for those search terms. You can't (and shouldn't) ask customers to include specific keywords, but you can ask specific questions that prompt relevant language: "What service did we provide?" or "How did you find us?"

Review Responses

Responding to reviews — both positive and negative — signals engagement. Your responses are also an opportunity to naturally include relevant service and location keywords.

Reviews on Other Platforms

While Google reviews are most important for Map Pack rankings, reviews on Facebook, Yelp, Trustpilot, and industry-specific platforms contribute to your overall online reputation and can appear in search results.

Building a Sustainable Review System

The goal is a systematic approach to generating reviews that produces steady results month after month. This is one of the four pillars of our GBP optimisation strategy.
