Local SEO for Service Area Businesses: Ranking Without a Shopfront

Service area businesses (SABs) — plumbers, electricians, mobile hairdressers, landscapers, cleaners, and similar trades — face unique local SEO challenges. You travel to your customers rather than them coming to you, which means your local SEO strategy needs a different approach from businesses with a shopfront.

GBP Settings for Service Area Businesses

Google allows you to set your Google Business Profile as a service area business. This means:

  • You define the areas you serve rather than displaying your address
  • Your address is hidden from customers (important for home-based businesses)
  • You can set a radius or specific areas you cover

The Proximity Challenge

The biggest challenge for SABs is proximity. Google's algorithm still favours businesses closer to the searcher. If you're based in one town but a customer searches from another town 10 miles away, a local competitor in that town may outrank you — even if you serve that area.

How to Overcome the Proximity Disadvantage

1. Build Comprehensive Location Pages

Location pages are even more important for SABs than for businesses with a shopfront. Create dedicated pages for every town, village, and suburb within your service area.

2. Maximise Your GBP Service Areas

Set your service areas in your GBP to cover every area you genuinely serve. Don't overextend — only include areas you'll actually travel to.

3. Get Reviews Mentioning Locations

When customers mention their town in reviews ("Great plumber, did excellent work at our house in Bridport"), it strengthens your relevance for that location.

4. Post Location-Aware Content

Your GBP posts should reference different areas within your service area. "Just completed a beautiful kitchen installation in Dorchester" signals to Google that you serve that area.

Common SAB Mistakes

  • Setting a service area that's unrealistically large
  • Not creating location pages because "we don't have a shopfront there"
  • Displaying a home address when it should be hidden
  • Using a virtual office address to "game" proximity
